Types of Computer Network Quiz

A computer Network is a group of computers linked to each other computer over the internet. A Computer Network is used to connect more than one computer. A computer network is used to share data from one system to another system using Hardware sharing and software sharing. Hardware sharing includes a modem, printers, etc.

Father of Computer Networks:- Ray Noorda

A Computer network is mainly of three types which are further divided.

  1. Local Area Network(LAN)
  2. Metropolitan Area Network(MAN)
  3. Wide Area Network(WAN)
  1. Local Area Network(LAN): LAN stands for Local Area Network. LAN is used to share data within a limited geographical area. It is used to share data within a building such as Ethernet cable. It is used to share data within a building or within an office.

Advantages of LAN:

1. Internet Sharing:- Local Area Network is used to share the internet within the building too with the help of a LAN. LAN helps the user the share internet within buildings or offices or cafes by using LAN.

2. Resources Sharing: All the resources that are connected to one computer or one network can share their data with another computer which includes modems, drives, and printers.

3. Sharing applications and software: Applications and Software sharing can also be shared over the LAN. We can share licensed software or applications over the internet so that users can use them at a low cost.

4. Relation between client and server: All types of data that are stored in the server can be accessed at any time whenever the user needs the same data.

Disadvantages of LAN:

  1. Covers small geographical area: It is the main disadvantage of the LAN is that it covers a small geographical area. It cannot share data without a limited area.

2. Slow Printing: In the LAN there is slow printing due to which the process for printing and sharing data over the internet consumes much more time than usual.

3. Limited Connection: In LAN there are limited computers connected within a limited area. Outside the limited area, it cannot connect to the computer systems.

4. High degree of maintenance: There is a need for a high degree of maintenance in LAN.

5. Virus spread more easily: In Local Area Networks there is a virus spread more easily on the LAN. It transfers easily one system to another system over the LAN.

Types of LAN:

There are mainly two types of LAN

  1. Personal Area Network(PAN): PAN stands for Personal Area Network. PAN is used where the computer connection is within one room. e.g. Bluetooth, Infrared, etc.
  2. Campus Area Network(CAN): CAN stands for Campus Area Network. It is used where computers are connected to more than one building. e.g Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity)

2. Metropolitan Area Network(MAN): MAN stands for Metropolitan Area Network. This network is used to connect computers within a city or town such as cable TV, Metro Rail Network, etc. When the number of LANs is connected, it makes MAN.

Advantages of Metropolitan Area Network:

1 Wider than LAN: One of the advantages of the MAN is that it is wider than LAN. It connects more than one LAN to make a MAN. It connects a number of villages to connect a city which is why it is called wider than the Local Area Network.

2. High security than LAN: There is high security than LAN for sharing data. It is more secure than the LAN for sharing data from one system to another system.

3. Easy to implement link: It is very easy to implement a link in the Metropolitan Area Network. We can very easily implement a link than LAN.

Distadvantages of Matropolitan Area Network(MAN):

  1. Required more cables: one of the main disadvantages of the MAN is that there are more cables needed for the Metropolitan Area Network. There is a need for more cables than LAN.

2. Need for network Administrator: In this type of network there is also a need for a network administrator for a network installation at a time due to which the cost of the network also increases.

3. Skill Technician: In this type of network there is also a need for skilled technicians for network maintenance.

4. Data Rate: Data rate is slow as compared to another network in Metropolitan Area Network.

3. Wide Area Network(WAN): WAN stands for Wide Area Network. This network has no limit for sharing its data. It connects more than one computer system all over the country. It connects city to city. All computers are used to share data geographically such as the Internet, Satellites, etc.

Advantages of Wide Area Network:

Covers large network: Wide Area Network covers large networks all over the world. It can share information or data from one system to another system all over the world through WAN.

2. Sent message quickly: Wide Area Network can send messages quickly as soon as possible because of the fast networking capability of WAN. It is faster than LAN or WAN.

3. Boost your privacy: WAN is used to boost privacy. Using or sending data or information over the WAN is more secure than other networks too.

4. Updated files: Using WAN it is also the main advantage that helps to stay updated all the time due to fast technology

Disadvantages of the WAN:

1 . Security: Although using WAN there is also the need for security solutions for using this network. without the solution of this network data sometimes comes under risk because of security threats.

2. Installation cost: In a wide area network it consumes a lot of installation cost. It consumes more costs than the LAN or MAN.

3. Disconnection problems

4. Troubleshooting problems

Topology or Architecture of Network:

Topology is the physical arrangement of all the computers to connect its computer, peripheral devices, multiple cables, or arrangement of connection between the nodes or cables. Topology is the representation of data in a different way.

Types of Topology:

  1. STAR
  2. BUS
  3. MESH
  4. RING
  5. TREE
  6. HYBRID

STAR Topology: In Star topology, every node is connected to its central node which is called HUB. If one node fails it does not affect the network. But if the central node is failed due to some technical problem the whole process will go down. In this type of topology, the central point is called the server and its other nodes are called the client.

BUS Topology: BUS topology is also called Line Topology. This topology transfer the data in one direction. If one computer system of the BUS Topology failed then it will affect the whole process. Then the rest of the system behind the failed system cannot transfer the data. It requires less data than the STAR Topology.

MESH Topology: In MESH topology every computer is connected over the network with multiple paths. This topology has multiple paths to send the data and receive the data all over the network. If one system failed in this type of topology then it will not affect the whole process of the network. It doesn’t affect the other systems. It is very expensive compared to the other topologies.

RING Topology: In RING Topology all computers are connected like a ring shape. In RING Topology all computers are connected in a circle. In this type of topology if one system failed. It will affect the whole computer system over the network.

HYBRID Topology: HYBRID Topology is a combination of more than one topology. It is the combination of not only one topology but more than one topology to share or transfer data.
