OPERATING SYSTEM: Operating system is system software that is designed to operate computer hardware. An operating system is an interface between the user and the hardware. It is that system that is used to operate anything it may be a computer system or mobile phones, laptops, or Atm machines. Without an operating system, a computer cannot operate. The computer operating system manages all other programs on the machines. An operating system is the first program or thing that is loaded into the main memory when we start/boot a computer. An operating system is software that manages all the resources such as file management, device management, CPU management, etc. OS is the set of programs that helps in managing hardware and software resources of a computer system.
COMPONENTS OF THE OPERATING SYSTEM:
There are mainly two components of the operating systems namely Kernal and Shell.
KERNAL: KERNAL is that part of the OS that is responsible for managing all the resources of the hardware.
SHELL: Shell is command line interface. It is that point of the OS which interact between the user and services of the hardware.
OPERATING SYSTEM TYPES:
- SINGLE-USER, SINGLE TASK: Single user operating system is an operating system that allows a single user to perform only one task at a time. E.g. Ms DOS, Palm OS, Andriod OS, Windows 95 etc.
- MULTI-USER, MULTI-TASKING: Multi-tasking os is an operating system that supports more than one task at a time. E.g. UNIX, Mainframe, Linux, windows servers, Macintosh.
- REAL-TIME OPERATING SYSTEM: Real-time operating system is one the OS which is used in real-time. This is works and processes for a fixed time and a small quantum of time. E.g. Fax Machines, Printers, Scanners, Routers, Robots, and Embedded OS.
- SINGLE USER, MULTI-TASKING OS: This operating system is a system that is primarily used in laptops and desktops. This allows a single user to run multiple applications at a time: E.g. Ms. Windows, Appless’ Macintosh OS.
BOOTING: It is the process of loading os into main memory is called booting. It is the process when we turn on the computer system it takes time to display on the main screen of the computer, that particular time os takes time to loaded into the main memory. In the booting process operating system is loaded into the main memory i.e RAM and desktop screen display.
BOOTING PROCESS: When we press the power on button and then power supply on than CPU sends the message to ROM, ROM sends a message to POST, POST sends a message to ROM, ROM sends a message to BIOS, BIOS sends a message to CMOS, CMOS sends a message to RAM.(CPU-ROM-POST-BIOS-CMOS-RAM)
BOOTING is the process of starting or restarting a computer.
BOOTING TYPES: Booting is of two types namely Cold Booting and Warm Booting.
COLD BOOTING: Cold booting take place when we start a computer.
WARM BOOTING: Warm booting refers to the restarting system using restart button.
LINUX OS: Linux is an open source software because the source code of Linux is freely available to everyone. Linux was developed by Linus Torvalds. Linux is based on C language. E.g. Ubuntu, Red hat, Linux Mint, Debian etc.
UNICS(UNIX OS): (Unicode Information Computing System Source) Unix code is not available to the public. Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie developed Unix. Unix is written in C language. E.g OSX, BSD, Solaris, AIX, IRIX, etc.
